Premier League – Netbusters
The premier league is watched by over 2 billion viewers worldwide. As part of the 2016-17 rebrand Lightfield Studio were commissioned by Dixon Baxi to create the new title sequence for highlights program Netbusters, which focuses on the best goals from that week’s action.
About
Netbusters is an exciting look all the goals from that week’s Premier League action. The titles zoom in on the exact moment the player smashes the ball into the net, zooming into a macro detail level to see the foot compress the ball and the shockwaves that flow through the internal structure.
After storyboarding and putting an animatic together, Lightfield supervised the VFX shoot. Players were filmed on the Phantomflex 4K at 930 frames per second allowing us to linger on their acrobatics. We created a photoreal PL Nike Ordem ball and CR7 Ronaldo boot using photogrammetry so we could zoom in to extreme closeup in 3D.
At the moment of impact we flip from macro realistic 3D to beautiful abstract animation, zooming into a “molecular level”. We see the foot compress the ball and the shockwaves that flow through the structure. We show the speed and power using a more abstract, freeform visual language.
Through this sequence we interleaved treated clips from the show to link it back closely to key moments from the football season and to keep the level of PL branding high throughout.
